The Grid

2020 | A Hirsch & Mann installation for Cisco Live Barcelona

The interactive experience was showcased at Cisco Live Barcelona  2020 and has been designed as a large-scale puzzle which requires to be solved in a team. Hirsch & Mann supported GPJ Johnson to solve & produce the light piece along with its interactivity. Participants were challenged to navigate the installation collaboratively and discover how to keep all the lights on.

With 8 radial zones around the center of the space, groups of 2-4 participants walked into the space with all zones turned off. They needed to figure out the right way to turn all zones on in a two minute time frame.

Each zone somebody stepped into would toggle the on/off state of that zone, its two neighbouring zones, and the opposing zone!

Within this design, my role included prototyping and testing various neon-affect lighting fixtures, working with the electronics engineer to write the firmware for custom PCBs for controlling the LEDs, pressure sensor input boards and GridEye input boards.

I also wrote the software that ran the end-to-end user journey, not only for the interactive logic using the sensor inputs and LED/audio outputs - but also the on-boarding / win / lose game states to guide users through the hollistic experience.
